Chvrches' debut single, The Mother We Share, was written and recorded in 48 hours, using the only three synths they owned - but it became a word of mouth hit, earning them airplay on BBC Radio 1 and support slots with Passion Pit and Depeche Mode.

Judges describe their music as "bursting with hope and joyous abandon", inspired by the likes of MGMT, Passion Pit and Bleachers.

Other acts on the bill for the one-day fest, set to take place May 18 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl, include Phoenix, Death Cab for Cutie, the War on Drugs, Miike Snow, Passion Pit and Alvvays.

At least half of the composers interviewed also are, or once were, performing musicians — Vincent is in darkDARK, Dancy used to be in Modern Time Machines, Lachi continues to release dance music tracks, and Hultquist was in the indie pop band Passion Pit.
