Conceptacles in pairs beneath the stem; the smaller ones acorn-shaped, containing at the base a single macrospore with a few corpuscles of unknown character above it; the larger ones globose, and having a basal placenta which bears many pedicellate microsporangia which contain masses of microspores.

Capsule pedicellate, oval, 8-ribbed, 2-celled, 2-valved.

Spikelets spicate, in pairs, the pedicellate sterile or rudimentary; rhachis bearded.

Fruit drupe-like, with an oblong, 8-striate stone.—Leaves alternate, entire and petioled, and flowers axillary and pedicellate.

Capsule 4-valved, pedicellate; plants leafy-stemmed, rarely thallose.
