Hydrogen and helium are the first and lightest entries on the periodic table of the elements.

To that end, Minkler has decorated every wall of her studio classroom with colorful bulletin boards and educational resources — including miniature biographies of William Shakespeare and Langston Hughes, fun facts about the ancient Greek gods, a planetary diagram of the solar system, the periodic table of the elements, guides to converting fractions and solving algebraic equations, giant maps of the United States and the world, and motivational phrases such as “Be brave,” “Dream big” and “Never give up.”

Visual artist Langley Spurlock and poet John Martin Tarrat spent several years interpreting the periodic table of the elements, and they’re not quite ready to let that subject go.

Indeed, it was in the 1970s that Whittingham began investigating the use of lithium, the smallest and lightest metal in the periodic table of the elements.

He published his now-famous version of the periodic table of the elements in 1869, the same year that Nature was launched.
