To saxophonist and dancer Alex Dugdale, who led a nineteen-piece big band and accompanied a piano trio as a tap soloist, among other performances, his 2022 residency represents “one of the highlights of my life so far,” he says.

He explains that part of what makes this jazz duo so remarkable is that the two of them are like a new kind of jazz piano trio: Goldings’ covers piano and bass while Sullivan’s tap dancing becomes a third hand.

Variations on the trio theme: Ravel’s 1914 Piano Trio, according to Ehnes, “is simply one of the greatest pieces of chamber music ever written.”

In contrast, the B major Piano Trio began as young man’s music: It’s the first chamber composition Brahms deemed worthy to publish.

“Portrait of a Queen,” for instance, celebrates Black womanhood; “Motherboxx Connection” draws on the Afrofuturist comics of Black Kirby; “Be Still and Know,” a piano trio, peacefully professes God’s presence and grace; “Breathe” is a calming meditation for chamber orchestra inspired by the theology of Howard Thurman.
