Dr. Alessandro Gardini was interested in the signals and inputs that cause pluripotent stem cells to commit to developing into neural cells during the process of "neurogenesis": the formation of the human nervous system, including the brain.

Using UniMat, the team successfully produced kidney organoids featuring nephron structures and blood vessels similar to those found in human kidneys from human-induced pluripotent stem cells, achieving consistent quality and greatly improving production efficiency.

In this new research, through a set of experiments conducted in collaboration with Dr Ralf Jauch's lab in The University of Hong Kong / Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology, the team introduced choanoflagellate Sox genes into mouse cells, replacing the native Sox2 gene achieving reprogramming towards the pluripotent stem cell state.

Once the membrane was in place, the team added human induced pluripotent stem cell derivatives into the chip.

The paper is entitled 'Naive pluripotent stem cell-based models capture FGF-dependent human hypoblast lineage specification' and is published in Cell Stem Cell.
