Previously, the shark was only compared with the great white, but the latest analysis was expanded to include five modern sharks, including the makos, salmon shark and porbeagle shark.

In 2010, a porbeagle shark bit a diver’s camera off the coast of Eastport, according to the International Shark Attack File.

The only other confirmed shark attack in the state happened 10 years ago in Eastport and involved a porbeagle, not a great white.

He described the porbeagle as "really big and powerful" and said it was fortunate the shark had caught Mr Berryman with its top jaw but did not clamp its bottom jaw closed.

The porbeagle shark was hauled up by the crew of the Govenek of Ladram in a net more than 100 miles off Land’s End.
