Over the last three weeks, killer whales native to Mexico and Central America have been spotted dozens of times from Long Beach to the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Laguna Beach, according to Tyler Askari, assistant port captain for Long Beach-based Harbor Breeze Yacht Charter and Cruises.

Tyler Askari, assistant port captain with Harbor Breeze Cruises, said the tour agency had received reports of possible orcas Monday morning from ferry crews operating between the mainland and Catalina Island.

By Monday 68 positive cases, including a handful among the passengers, had been detected, port captain Diogo Vieira Branco told the Lusa news agency.

Capt. Jaime Herrera died on Feb. 24 after six men attacked the San Ramon vessel, which was anchored near the shores of the eastern state of Anzoategui, according to a report from the port captain’s office.

Both men were nominated for the honor by the ship’s Port Captain Sharon Dounce.
