The high pressure ridge this week is expected to bring temperatures in the park up to 118 degrees by Thursday and Friday, just down slightly from the average temperature of 121.9 degrees experienced in July.

After a generally mild August across much of California, forecasters say a high pressure ridge is expected to usher in temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees higher than normal along the coast and as much as 20 degrees above in inland communities.

This week, the state’s inland communities will feel the most intense temperature spikes from the high pressure ridge, or heat dome, parked over California, while the coast will be largely unaffected — a strong “June gloom” still providing refuge from the heat.

The National Weather Service said a strengthening high pressure ridge is one reason behind the high temperatures.

The inbound storm is forming as a northern pressure ridge links with subtropical moisture moving up from Hawaii.
