Train punctuality in Germany is appalling - worse than in the UK, which will astound weary British commuters.

He said his focus was on "high standards of uniform and appearance, punctuality, attendance, behaviour, attitude" and said prevailing approaches to behaviour were misguided.

It leases the rest to train operating companies who manage them but are not responsible for the punctuality of other operators using the stations.

"What we're also seeing is greater engagement in classes, an increase in attendance to school and punctuality to lessons has increased," Mr Tate added.

That compares with a declining level of punctuality in Great Britain of 67.8% trains arriving on schedule in the year to March 2023.
