In two separate excursions, new records have been set for the quillback carpsucker and bigmouth buffalo.

Owen Seay of Big Rapids was baitcasting in the Muskegon River in Mecosta County on April 28 when he hooked a 9 pound, 15-ounce quillback that measured 24.75 inches, the department said.

The yelloweye rockfish comprises more than 95% of the commercial and sport harvest and is the primary target compared to six other species, including quillback, copper, rosethorn, canary, China and tiger rockfish.

The Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday it has received five applications for four species, including lake sturgeon, shortnose gar, golden redhorse and the quillback carpsucker.

This group includes gopher, China, black and yellow, copper, kelp bass and quillback.
