Hotton spent several field seasons excavating fossils from rock outcrops in north central Texas known as the Red Beds.

Two red beds illustrated in her essay, made in New England around 1800, are now for sale through the dealer Austin T. Miller in Columbus, Ohio, and priced between $7,500 and $8,500 each.

Another important line of evidence which Knowlton and others have cited as a proof of the non-zonal arrangement of climate in the past, is the vast red beds which are found in the Proterozoic, late Silurian, Devonian, Permian, and Triassic, and in some Tertiary formations.

Great aridity now prevails north of the Himalayas and related ranges, and red beds are accumulating in the centers of the great deserts, such as those of the Tarim Basin and the Transcaspian.

Such conditions may have given rise to the high degree of oxidation in the famous Permian red beds.
