Dixson and co-authors found that after 5 days in water with high levels of CO2, sharks called smooth dogfish avoided the smell of their prey.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the smooth dogfish quota will be a little less than 4 million pounds in 2019.

There are wobbegongs — also sharks, sometimes called “the ambush kings” — and loggerhead sea turtles, along with clearnose skates, little skates and smooth dogfish.

The study was an offshoot of a larger survey of 12 shark species, including the four-foot smooth dogfish, the spiny dogfish and Atlantic sharpnose shark — all relatively small.

Fishermen don’t typically catch that many pounds of smooth dogfish per year.
