Erin, a French and social anthropology student, decided to take a paid position at a charity in Edinburgh for the summer rather than an unpaid role.

"I've never worked on something like that before," says Nellie, who graduated from the University of Edinburgh last year after studying sustainable development and social anthropology.

Luciano Sipiano, a fourth year social anthropology and politics student from Italy, said he completely agreed with students who have spoken about protesting at graduation ceremonies.

The researcher is a specialist in social anthropology and the political anthropology of post-revolutionary Iran, and has written a number of books, including Revolution under the Veil: Islamic Women of Iran.

Breaking with tradition again, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, to study archaeology and physical and social anthropology but later changed to history.
