Some may use yoga mats and virtual reality headsets to mentally escape the daily grind but now statisticians are using them to chart the rising cost of living.

Scotland's chief statistician has been told to publish the results of a review into a controversial school sex survey which was first requested almost three years ago.

She added that "appropriate steps" were being taken by the statistician to reflect the "strength of feeling" on the survey.

The veteran statistician explained that outliers were "something that you are pretty convinced is not just normal variation... there is some special cause behind it".

“Having human data showing an effect like that … it’s a rare thing,” said Jinot, the former EPA statistician and toxicologist.
