stimulated emission
/ ²õ³Ùij¾â€²yÉ™-±ôÄå′³ÙÄ»å /
- The emission of electromagnetic radiation in the form of photons of a given frequency, triggered by photons of the same frequency. For example, an excited atom, with an electron in an energy orbit higher than normal, releases a photon of a specific frequency when the electron drops back to a lower energy orbit; if this photon strikes another electron in the same high-energy orbit in another atom, another photon of the same frequency is released. The emitted photons and the triggering photons are always in phase, have the same polarization, and travel in the same direction.
- Also called induced emission
- See also population inversion
Example Sentences
The principle is somewhat similar to what occurs during stimulated emission of radiation in atoms.
The researchers claim to have seen signs of this stimulated emission of Hawking radiation from the GW190521 remnant.
The word “maser†is an acronym for “microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation,†and this radiation is the radio analogue of an optical-light laser.
Researchers used a live-cell imaging technique called stimulated emission depletion microscopy, developed by Nobel laureate Stefan Hell, to image the mitochondria, applying a special fluorescent marker molecule to their samples to see them.
Unlike stimulated emission, which occurs as the result of a passing photon, an atom also experiences spontaneous emission.
