The Asian tiger mosquito, aedes albopictus, which is thought to be the most invasive species of mosquito in the world, is now spreading across Europe from its southern European 'base camp'.

County officials discovered the Asian tiger mosquito in El Monte, which raised alarm bells because of its ability to carry serious illnesses, including dengue and yellow fever in humans, and heartworm in dogs, according to the UC Riverside Center for Invasive Species Research.

The tiger mosquito is a known vector for many viruses including West Nile, chikungunya and dengue.

One major health concern is the UK becoming more suitable for invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito, also known as Aedes albopictus.

France first detected A. albopictus—also known as the Asian tiger mosquito—in 1999, but it died out, only becoming endemic after a new introduction in 2004.
