The researchers examined the depth, topography, and soil conditions for more than 69,000 watersheds across the Northern Hemisphere -- from just above the Tropic of Cancer to the North Pole -- using satellite and climate data.

During the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice, the sun appears directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, the Tropic of Cancer’s southern mirror image.

Geochemical evidence from ancient rocks suggests that zones of open ocean may have been present north of the Tropic of Cancer, a region that was previously considered too cold to host life during this period.
