Sitting on a carved wooden throne, the new queen was announced at a gathering at Tûrangawaewae Marae, which is the seat of the Kiingitanga or Māori king movement.

New Zealand media reported the king was expected to lie in state at Turangawaewae Marae, the seat of the Māori king, for five days, then would be taken to rest on Taupiri Mountain.

They are due to visit Turangawaewae Marae, the home of the Kingitanga or Maori monarchs, where they will view a waka armada of canoes on the country's longest river, the Waikato, on the North Island.

William and Catherine were due to meet King Tuheitia - who ascended to the Maori throne in 2006 - at his official residence, Turangawaewae, on the country's North Island.
