Boeing's 747, the original and arguably most aesthetic "Jumbo Jet", revolutionized air travel only to see its more than five-decade reign as "Queen of the Skies" ended by more efficient twinjet planes.

Boeing has long argued that the "very large" category is on its way out as airlines switch to smaller twinjets.

Boeing has sold just 13 of its flagship twinjet so far this year.

But conscious of the threat of drawing demand away from its existing A350 line-up, it said it did not expect the bulk of the airline business to be attracted to a 400-seat twinjet.

Regulators did not allow two-engine airliners - or twinjets - to fly more than 60 minutes from the nearest airport, in case one engine failed.
