Outside of the EU, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Americans would end up paying the biggest price for what he called "unjustified tariffs", but said his government would not impose reciprocal measures.

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservatives, the main opposition party, called the tariffs "unjustified and unprovoked".

"We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," he said.

Leaders in Canada and Europe have called the new taxes unjustified and struck back with their own tariffs on a range of US products.

Carney on Wednesday condemned the latest round of US tariffs as "unjustified".
