Parts of the Urals, western Siberia and the Volga basin have been hit by floods.

Thousands of people are being evacuated in the Russian Urals after a section of the embankment dam burst in the mountain city of Orsk, officials say.

A 50-year-old university professor was imprisoned Saturday for 15 days after she tried to throw green liquid into a ballot box in the Urals city of Ekaterinburg, local news site Ura.ru reported.

The chief risk to today’s stability is a sharp drop in the price of oil, now trading around $70 a barrel for Russia’s Urals blend.

"Officials, ultra-right politicians and the church are actively forcing women and girls to give birth to unwanted children," said the Urals Feminist Movement group, which has organised small-scale protests in favour of abortion rights.
