In addition to the cattleyas, customers find such beauties as vandas, similar in size and form to phalaenopsis but bluer and patterned, and oncidiums, with their profuse sprays of bright, delicate blooms.

In an adjoining gallery called the Silver Garden, vanda orchids are arranged almost as an art installation, more than 200 aloft on wires in a handful of intensely blue varieties.

If you want to see a naturally blue orchid, look for the azure vandas on show at Longwood.

Chief amongst them may be mentioned a very beautiful “vanda,” which grew mostly on trees in the open grass country, and which I witnessed in full bloom during my stay here.

Slipper orchids are densely stacked on the benches, and vandas and cattleyas hang from above.
