On the night of 11 January 2005, a family of five attempted to escape a violent storm battering their home on the island of South Uist.

At least eight people have died and thousands are stranded without power after violent storms swept across Brazil on Friday.

The agency has issued its rare "special warning" for the most violent storms, warning of landslides, flooding and large-scale damage.

The tragedy began on Sunday night with violent storms buffeting the boats here.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.
