A few thousand people with national white-and-red flags gathered in rain to watch the Zodiak II technical ship pass through the water gates to inaugurate the canal.

One was swept under a water gate, where a CBP officer managed to reach down and pull him out.

It added that water had been diverted to reservoirs over the past few weeks, but the drop in levels at Bures Mill has been caused by debris under the water gate which has blocked flows.

The other 600 gallons went through a storm water gate in the containment berm and impacted rangeland.

A water gate and pumping facility will be set up at both ends of the 200x2,000-meter waterway to prevent waves and tide level from affecting the competition.
