Yakima County Sheriff’s deputies killed 64 cockfighting roosters in mid-May near Zillah after responding to a call about the welfare of horses on a property.

Casey Schilperoort, the spokesperson for the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, said the deputies had received a call about the welfare of horses at the property near Zillah.

Desert Wind Winery in Prosser plays host to a luxury inn, while VanArnam Vineyards in Zillah operates a cottage.

In raids in Zillah and Outlook in Yakima County, authorities seized more than 150 roosters believed to have been used in cockfighting.

A fire destroyed wine in storage at Mas Chappell, a small winery in Zillah, on Wednesday morning, according to Yakima County Fire District No. 5.
